Curses, Foiled Again

This Memorial Day in Sin City is perfect. The sun is shining, virtually no clouds in the sky, a light breeze is blowing, and it’s 76 degrees. Foxy and I were about to head over to a couple’s house for a Memorial Day party when we got a call that they had contracted COVID.

Our friends and us have been lucky, knock on wood, as our group has been mostly COVID free for the duration. This was our first large social event in a couple of years, as we’ve been forced to be monogamous through no fault of our own. As a result, the pool party will be on hiatus for a few weeks.

Publishers Starting to Nit Pick

When I decided to pull my four-book House Party Series out of Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited so I could publish the stories wide, it seemed to be a logical decision. Unfortunately, being in KU means that you cannot distribute a story outside of Amazon’s little world.

As an author struggling to feed his Frenchie’s Blue Buffalo habit and my wife’s love of shoes, I need every sale I can get. Having one room in our house called the “Shoe Room” means what it says!

Locked into the Zon means that my Apple iBooks fans don’t get any love in addition to my readers on SmashWords. As a writer of explicit erotic tales, it’s more than just deciding what four-letter word to use before or after “slut?” While the vast majority of smut writers don’t get rich from pounding the keyboard, we do like to see those sales numbers clicking up like the mileage on your car’s odometer.

Hence, the eternal decision narrow or wide? Should you publish narrow through Amazon KU or go wide and include the rest of the market? In most of my stories, I’ve skipped the KU path as that allows me to publish to all markets and not just the Internet’s answer to Walmart.

Paperbacks Doing Better Than Expected

My first paperback, Stripper or Nurse?, came out a while back and didn’t do much for my bottom line. The story, which I personally consider one of my top ten, has sold well in electronic format for digital readers such as cell phones, tablets, PCs, and Macs. Yet struggled in paperback format.

I entered the paperback market with some trepidation as I wasn’t convinced that porn on paper was a viable alternative these days, especially with Millennials and their two opposable thumbs. But, it’s still probably safer to drop your book in the toilet rather than your cell phone as you attempt to grab a kleenex while holding two other objects precious to your image.

Computers Will Be The Death Of Me

It’s Saturday morning in Lost Wages, and I’m cautiously optimistic about the wide release of House Party 2 on SmashWords et al. HP2 was previously released on Amazon. So the expansion to SmashWords is pretty straightforward, but there have been a couple of potholes in the road.

Now that I’ve switched to Scrivener on my PCs and Macs, the process of assembling a final copy to submit to the designated publisher is several steps easier. For me, the benefit of Scrivener is that, for the first time, I can create a file for multiple publishers in one project.

A typical book consists of the following parts:
Front Matter: The cover, title page, copyright notice, and table of contents.
Body: The actual story itself.
Back Matter: Ads, links to the author’s website, other award-winning stories, and about the author.

Now Auditioning Ukrainian Strippers!

Las Vegas, or Sin City as it’s locally known, is always good for a laugh. While a lot of people who live here are deeply religious, there is a lot of us who bend in the other direction.

Little Darlings, a local strip club, is one of the edgier gentleman’s clubs in town and shows a preference for the younger crowd. Their advertising is always good for a laugh when you’re stuck in an I-15 traffic jam alongside the Strip.

While I’m not sure how many Ukrainian strippers have fled the war zone to Lost Wages, the club says it’s hired at least one and interviewed several.

When the pandemic hit a couple of years ago, their sign lamented, “We’re Clothed.” Little Darlings is one of our clubs where the girls get buck naked, but you can’t buy alcohol. To me, this was a contradiction in terms when you only had to be eighteen to see the girls take it all off. Yet if you go to a club that serves alcohol, patrons only get to see boobs.

Several years ago, their sign displayed, “Now Interviewing 2015 Graduates,” acknowledging that our state’s educational prowess is right at the bottom of the list. So it’s sad that in Las Vegas, a woman’s job prospects are deciding whether to take her clothes off or make beds.
