We Just Had an Earthquake

Around 10:33 AM PST, the Las Vegas area was moved (not really shaken) from the earthquake centered in Searles Valley California. It was weird and the first earthquake I’ve ever really felt.

It took a second to realize what was happening as I could feel the back and forth motion, which slowly got stronger. It lasted about 30 seconds and for awhile, the rock and roll motion was really evident.

Looking outside, I could see a nearby street lamp was shaking but then everything went quiet. I haven’t noticed any damage to my house as it didn’t seem severe.

Checking with https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map I saw that a 6.4 had occurred. There have been 114 quakes over 2.5 in the area which surprised me. I’ve watched the earthquake display at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and knew that they were fairly common but didn’t realize this common.

Television is reporting a 6.6 but according to the USGS, it was a maximum of 6.4 but who’s counting.

First, hopefully you and yours are okay and everyone and everything didn’t get damaged. I remember my first earthquake experience, which happened in Japan. I was outside with my son and talking with him and his boys when the unthinkable happened: The earth moved! I felt my body automatically adjust to the movement, keeping me upright and hearing myself saying, “What the fuck was that?” Come to find out that we’d felt a “mild” earthquake that happened about 100 miles from where I was.

The next one was, to me, funny as hell. Even though the epicenter was hundred of miles away in Virginia (it severely damaged the Washington Monument), my wife and I were in the living room talking and she had just walked to the patio door to peer out of it… when the earth moved right along with our entire apartment building.

She blurted out, “What the fuck was that?” as she sought to stabilize herself.

My response from where I was sitting was, “Earthquake.” And just like it wasn’t that big of a deal even though in all my time living here, we’ve never experienced something like that – some tremors, sure, but the earth actually moving? You just had to see the look on her face…

Everyone is fine, thanks for asking. The epicenter was about 150 miles away as the crow flies, across Death Valley from Las Vegas. While it was reasonably strong at 6.4-6.6, it was pretty mild in Vegas. No damage that I can tell.

I remember my first (maybe only) earthquake experience. I was living in LA, at work, on the phone talking to a colleague in San Francisco about some research we were planning. All of a sudden the ground felt like jello. I thought, “Oh– should I go stand in the door frame like I’ve read you’re supposed to do?” But I didn’t want to break off the conversation… it was all over before I could make a decision.

Glad you’re okay, Larry. My sister, who lives in Orange County, said it made the water slosh out of her pool.

Foxy slept through the whole event but it was my first “real” earthquake. At first, I was trying to decide if it was real or was I having some kind of flashback from earlier excesses but looking outside I could see the street light moving. The one that caused so much damage in LA years ago was a 6.7, this one was a 6.4-6.6 and so I guess California was lucky. All I can say is that thank God the Trump Administration tells us there is no such thing as Global Warming!
