Yesterday, we lost a legend in country and crossover genres with the passing of Dolly Parton. As a kid growing up on a farm in deep East Texas, listening to Dolly on the radio was a given. After leaving the farm for the big city, I naturally moved into rock music but always had a fondness for Dolly and her down-to-earth songs.
Besides music, Dolly was a philanthropist, especially in helping young children learn through her library and book distribution programs.
With her self-deprecating humor, Dolly never apologized for her appearance, such as her big hair, makeup, dresses, and enhanced breasts. She is famous for saying, “It costs a lot of money to look this cheap.”
As a Texan, we all love girls with big hair, even though it’s not really in style. My wife, Foxy, has big hair, which has an interesting nexus. I’m a Yankee from the New England, but I always loved, and admired, Dolly. She was so comfortable in her own skin. Nobody could put her down because she believed in herself.
Only now that she’s gone am I reading all the stories about her philanthropy and her personal kindness. What more could one ask for than to be remembered not only for being gutsy and sexy and talented, but mostly for being a truly loving and good person.
