Amazon Loves to Yank My Chain!

Seduced By The Dark Side v3 200x300Over the last week or so, I’ve been having an “Adult” or “Safe” argument with Amazon Kindle. As a writer of smut, I have to tread a fine line on the cover art selected for my books.

This is the latest cover for Seduced by the Dark Side and while I like it, doesn’t really float my boat for a farm girl.

The cover below for “Seduced by the Dark Side” was the original and the one I really loved. For a while, it was marked as “Safe” which in Amazon speak means that it shows up in the search engines and people can easily find it.

Seduced By The Dark Side 200x300When I pick a cover image, first it must speak to me (in the ear preferably) and should relate to the story in question. Seduced by the Dark Side is a feel good smut story, as most of mine are, about a farm girl from Minnesota who longs for the bright lights of the big city. So with help from her parents, gets a job with a large casino/hotel on Las Vegas Boulevard.

If you’ve ever been to the baggage terminal at McCarran Airport, you know that it’s a voyeur’s dream. Besides the non-stop parade of dancers who commute here from Southern Cal, there are the housewives in for a weekend away from the parents and kiddies. This all means skin and lots of it, so the people watching is extra good.

So we picture our little farm girl, waiting for her luggage, and she strikes up a conversation with a dancer standing there. One thing leads to another and she ends up in the back end of a limo full of strippers. Naturally, the plot goes exactly where you’d expect it to. For more on Seduced by the Dark Side, click here.

So when I picked out the original image for the story, the girl in a t-shirt and shorts was wholesome yet a little slutty and seemed ripe to be dragged into the Dark Side where most of my girls typically end up.

seduced-by-the-dark-side-v2-200x300The story coasted along for a long time and then Amazon rejected the cover apparently as there was a hint of nipple poking through the t-shirt. Another one of my pet peeves is I don’t like girls to wear a bra and can trot out Wifey to prove my point, upon demand. So I reluctantly substituted this cover and life was good. Amazon changed my rating from Adult back to Safe, but secretly I seethed.

I let the cover stay for a few months, then switched it back hoping that the censors at Amazon wouldn’t notice. But No, No, No! They brought out the Nun with her ruler and rapped me across the knuckles.

So last weekend, I created a cover with a new girl and now have my Safe rating back. I like the new picture and while she looks a lot like Wifey, except no big hair, she’s not really farm girl material. She’s got the slut look I love but I can’t picture her milking cows.

I was a little concerned as the model had pulled her unbuttoned shorts down to almost showing her naughty bits but apparently, it was good enough.

We’ll see?

If there’s a reason why I haven’t written the books I know I can write, this is the biggest sticking point. I’m kinda wondering why no one has created a book-selling site along the lines of Amazon, Smashmouth, etc. and if one such site does exist, I wonder if they have nuns armed with rulers as well…

If you want to write about things that push the edge, then go with SmashWords. I typically have twice the sales with SmashWords that I do with Amazon and they never give me crap about my covers. On SmashWords my covers are more on the tame side and titles can include 4 letter words.

The side benefit of SmashWords is that they will push out your stuff to Apple iBooks, B&N, Nook, and a number of other resellers automatically assuming it meets the down market publisher’s restrictions. SmashWords will publish virtually everything except underage porn and by simply reviewing what they are currently selling, you can determine if your smut is allowed or not.

If you’re interested, grab a free copy of Mark Coker’s publishing guide which will lead you through the process. While you’ll probably not get rich, it’s certainly within reason to make a few hundred bucks a month from sitting in the bathroom with your laptop on your knees.

I write because I enjoy writing and would likely starve to death if I didn’t have a day job but it is fun and you get to meet a lot of interesting people such as yourself in this market. I’ve always enjoyed reading your posts and would love to see stuff you produce.

Most of the erotica writers are not making a killing and many will offer advice to help new authors. While my background is not a literary one, I like to help people with mechanical problems such as formatting and things like that rather than literary prose.

I’m sorry you still have so much trouble with that book. I have to admit I much prefer cover #2 to the last one, because, as you say, at least it has the farm girl look. But I’m not a man, so my opinion isn’t very important 😉

I agree with you. From my standpoint, I have to assume that someone is looking for something to read and is looking at maybe twenty covers trying to decide what to read. Many of my fellow authors like to create elaborate cover images but to me, once you get to that point you’ve pretty well got your mouse on the Click to Buy button. My thought is to grab your eyes when you’re scanning down a list of potential candidates to get you to select mine over someone else.

I’ll often enlist Wifey in the final decision and get her opinion but in the end, it’s my choice. The cover has to check several boxes on my list, including appeal to me.
