How Do I Write?

TheRunawayCoverThumb72dpiAs an author, I’m always interested in how and why other authors write. Even though I primarily write erotic literature (a.k.a. smut), I like to think there is some rationale behind the process. Other authors tell me I should outline and plan out my story before writing it but that just doesn’t seem to work for me as in life, I have no idea how the story will turn out.

I’m currently reading Stephen King’s new book, Finders Keepers, and he makes a statement that perfectly describes how I write. “A good novelist does not lead his characters, he follows them. A good novelist does not create events, he watches them happen and then writes down what he sees. A good novelist realizes he is a secretary, not God.”, Stephen King, Finders Keepers

I get an idea for a story, just something that gets me thinking about a set of characters and what they might do. Then I let those people start acting in my brain and like Stephen King, I follow along and write down what they do. I have an idea of how the story will end up but sometimes the characters take off in a different direction and the story ends up completely different.

I’ll give you an example of a story I wrote, The Runaway, which started as an actual event that I spun into a story. Wifey and I were driving along one evening just before Christmas and we spotted a 18 year old (or thereabouts) girl standing on a corner holding up a cardboard sign for assistance. We were going to an important meeting and on a tight schedule and so I didn’t stop for her.

This still bothers my conscience, as a Texan we always help those in need and she didn’t look like a common panhandler, but someone who actually needed help. Anyway I got to thinking about the girl and what could potentially happen. Using this as a starting point I created a story line in which we picked the girl up for purely humanitarian reasons, being the nice guy I am :), but as luck would have it, she jumped right into our perverted lifestyle with both feet.

Like all my stories, I just rounded up the characters in my head and pressed Play, then stood back and watched to see what happened. The story turned out to be one which I think is pretty good. Anyway so I guess I write like Stephen King except hopefully not as creepy as he is. LOL

My stories are always HEA and no violence except sometimes when Wifey gets her crop and disciplines her slaves.

I set up a special offer for the next month to buy this one at a deep discount, just for my loyal fans. After reading it, please leave a review if only a few words. This is the blurb on the story:

The Runaway (34,000 Words): Foxy and Larry, two swingers, pickup a stranded girl on the side of the road and take her home to try and help her just before Christmas. Initially their motives were simply to try and help her but rapidly the homeless girl becomes infatuated with the couple and their lifestyle. Their mission of mercy now turns to debauchery as they invite her into their home and family.

This 34,000 word story is reasonably long for your reading pleasure. This is an erotic romance story that is intended for mature adult audiences only and includes graphic descriptions of sex between consenting adults with straight, bisexual, and group scenes.

When I write, it always starts with a thought: “What if…?” or “I wonder what would happen if things went like this…?” and now I’m making the keyboard sing, doing character development and naming on the fly and just letting shit happen from there although, sometimes, I might be thinking about how a story could end before I even start writing it.

Either way, I just let the characters get themselves into trouble and work their way out of it if they can and, yeah, I guess I follow them the whole time; the next thing I know, I get up for a much-needed bathroom break, look down in the lower left corner of the Word document I’ve created, and find that I’ve written 200-300 pages… and I’m not done writing yet.

Ah, man… I really need to clean up all the stuff I’ve written and figure out the best way to get it published… and make a little chump change while I’m at it…

  2. My thoughts exactly Kdaddy and I agree you should collect up your ramblings and start publishing. I could send my limo by and pick you up so we could discuss it further. LOL

Seriously you always have on-topic and well thought out comments so you should publish. That way people will have to pay for your drivel like they do mine. It’s actually pretty easy and if you want any help, let me know. Just remember every story has to start with “It was a dark and stormy night!” At least that’s how Snoopy always started his stories on top of his doghouse.

  3. If you read this column and all the paragraphs were jammed together, I have no idea what happened. It looked okay when I published it but somehow got screwed up. Anyway I think it is corrected now but who the heck knows.

Love the Stephen King quote. When I write fiction, I’m usually inspired by something I’ve seen or discussed, like a fantasy. Then I just throw some stuff on a page to get it started, then I kind of follow the characters to see where they end up. When I write about our lifestyle adventures, it’s from a more journalistic point of view (who, what, when, why, etc.) I would love to start publishing some of the stuff in my depraved mind. It’s on my to-do list. 😀

    • I recommend that you give it a try and publish your smut. It’s really pretty easy to work through all the mechanics of publishing a story and give the world a glimpse into your depraved life. LOL
