Hot Brides in Vegas is a great read especially with an introduction by yours truly, Larry Archer. The story is set in the famous strip club, The Fox’s Den, and includes the characters initially featured in Larry’s stories. I got a hoot from reading how Lisabet depicts my usual number of suspects from the Foxy and Larry series of novels.

I realized I glossed over several points regarding the cover, which I’m attempting to clarify in this post.

One of the critical items the aspiring print self-publishing author will face is creating a cover image. For example, this is a JPG of the cover from The Shrink.

Below is an image of the book face down, opened to show the front and back.

The cover image comprises three parts: Front, Spine, and Back. Looking at the image above, the Front is the right side of the image and is the book’s front cover. The Spine is the rectangular portion of the book covering the pages. The Back is the left portion of the image and the book’s back cover.

Amazon furnishes two template documents which are to scale. The one below is a layout of the entire cover. Note that it is blocked out to show the various regions of the cover.

In addition to the image file above, Amazon also furnishes a dimensional template, as shown below. The actual measurements are created after the author enters the book information at the left.

Draft2Digital only provides the following image file, which is to scale.

After publishing twenty print books, I would not have a problem creating a cover using the image file supplied by D2D, but it would likely involve some head-scratching by the new author.

Hopefully, that provides more insight into creating a print book for Amazon KDP or Draft2Digital.
