I’m working on three books that have captured my imagination and getting ready for Santa Claus and New Year’s Eve. I keep telling myself to write one story at a time but never seem to be able to take my own advice. An idea for a story pops into my head, and with my MacBook Pro glued to my body, it’s easy to start pounding the keyboard rather than my pud.
Scrivener is my go-to word processor for writing, making it easy to crank out a story. The price of software is often eyewatering, and being able to purchase a Windows and MacOS copy of Scrivener for around a hundred bucks is not a bad deal. The license is perpetual, meaning you own and are not renting the software. One purchase covers all the computers you have that are running the same operating system. I use a Mac laptop, Windows desktops, and DropBox to synchronize my files. The file structure is identical for the operating systems, allowing me to switch between Windows and MacOS while editing a story seamlessly.
As an engineer, I love the details, and while loads of people create covers and help design electronic, paperback, and audiobook stories, I’ll do my own. Thank you very much. In my straight life I’ve created advertising copy and worked on publishing books. Previously, the only tools available for creating such masters were commercial products.
I learned on CorelDraw, QuarkXPress, and FrameMaker and use these products to create my books, covers, and paperbacks. Luckily, several open-source and low-cost products will allow users to replicate most of the functionality of high-priced commercial products.
Below are some of the products I recommend. This is my recommendation, and I receive no remuneration for these products. I don’t guarantee that these products will solve your problems or even make you better looking. Use at your own expense.
CorelDraw – A graphics design package allowing users to create a precisely laid out cover to exact dimensions. Certainly, PhotoShop or GIMP will go a long way to doing this, but why go part way when you can go all the way! Publishing your first paperback requires generating a single PDF file with the back cover + spine + front cover in one wide file. If the width is wrong, it will shift the spine (edge of the book). Also, the width of the spine is critical and is based on the number of pages. The publisher, such as Amazon, will check your cover image and reject it if the layout is incorrect. CorelDraw retails for $550 perpetual license or $200/year to rent the software.
InkScape – A CorelDraw replacement that is open-source and FREE. I occasionally use InkScape, but it appears to do anything Corel can. Am I going to switch? Probably not, as I have been a Corel user for years, and the cost is not a significant factor.
QuarkXPress – The desktop publishing program (DTP) that I love to hate. The one program that I have called more four-letter words that would make a sailor blush. But, once you get past its idiosyncracies, it will do amazing things. For $700 (perpetual), it certainly should. With Quark, I’ve created over 600-page paperbacks. I can start with a .docx file of the electronic story and publish the paperback version in about four hours. Quark will replace Corel, but I just haven’t learned that side of the program. Quark is great for creating a master file to print a book with all the bells and whistles from a major publishing company.
Scribus is an open-source version of QuarkXPress and is free to use. DTP software has to do many things, and Scribus is pretty good at it.
PhotoShop – The universally known image editing software from Adobe. As a photographer, I use LightRoom, and the package I use includes PhotoShop; otherwise, I’d likely not sign up for the rental. Rental prices go from $10/month to $50/month for the various packages.
GIMP – An open-source replacement for PhotoShop that I highly recommend.
Besides Scrivener, which I discussed earlier in the article, I use the recommended software packages to generate my erotic romance literature.
